It started off as a small idea when I realised they stopped making my favourite Vanilla Green Tea. I went on a mission to make my own blend and through this process discovered that mostly ALL flavoured teas are done so synthetically. I began to look at natural sources of tea flavouring using only organic ingredients.
After experimenting with different organic ingredients - and after several rounds of friends and family noting they could actually taste the difference with organic tea - The Tea Herbalist was born. Apart from the obvious fact that no chemicals end up in your cup, organic food is also better for the environment and promotes healthier and more sustainable use of natural resources.
On this journey, I was also shocked to learn some hard truths about food packaging. As noted by the Plastic Ocean Project - ".. every bit of plastic ever manufactured still exists today and is compounding by increasing global production. Every piece of plastic you have ever used is most likely still here somewhere."
Most Teabags also contain plastic. This sealed the deal on loose leaf for me. If you are intereted to know more about which teabags contain plastic, click here.
I also read this article on single use plastic, which changed my life. (Important points listed below for those who aren't already aware):
- So what’s the deal with single-use plastics?
Around 40% of plastics consumed are single-use. While convenient, they’re discarded after just one use. The amount of time, energy and effort that goes into producing, exporting and importing these products just doesn’t add up - especially if they’re made to last forever.
- Where do single-use plastics go once we’ve used them?
Shockingly, only 12% of plastics used in Australia ends up recycled. For years, we’ve been sending our plastic waste overseas to be processed, but now countries like China have refused to accept 99% of our rubbish. These days, our recyclable waste often ends up stockpiled in landfill, littered by the sides of roads, in our parks, nature and oceans.
I have always been in awe of the amount of waste that our daily food consumption produces, especially single use plastics like those used for tea and coffee (the stand up pouches) which simply get thrown away. So all packaging used at The Tea Herbalist is compostable, biodegradable and sustainably sourced. Including the mailers - they are made from plant based material or cardboard (biodegradable).
We operate in the pristine and natural locale of Crooked Brook. We are extremely focused on sustainability and customer satisfaction, so we only use the finest and most delicious ingredients.
